Torrance Park
2001 Santa Fe Ave
Torrance, CA
Inspired by the annual brush-burning ritual of Japanese calligraphers, Bachi BBQ centers on a ceremony to appreciate and retire used and broken bachi. The event will include a recital by LATI students and staff and the first-ever "Taiko Sweep", a coordinated trash pickup with the zone defined by the far-reaching sound of the taiko. The event is $5, open to LATI students, friends, and guests. We will be inviting the neighbors living near the park... welcome them into the LATI family!
Schedule

Bachi Kuyo details
Bring your broken and damaged bachi (drumsticks) for this ceremonial burning and show of appreciation.
After having held a pair of bachi for weeks, months, and sometimes years of practice, it feels improper to simply toss them in the trash. This ceremony provides a venue for showing appreciation for these bachi and the benefit they've given us as players.
Wood bachi of all types are acceptable. Please remove any tape or other non-natural materials.
Potluck details
- healthy foods
- self + 3
- no trash event
Following the Bachi Kuyo ceremony, we will have a light potluck dinner. Our goal is to make the potluck healthy and simple, and to produce as little trash as possible. LATI staff will be grilling a sampling of BBQ tofu for all attendees. Recommended items include onigiri, salad, and fresh fruits. Vegan options appreciated. Please bring all display and serving utensils as needed. Space at the grill is available to guests with advance request.
As a "no-trash" event, all diners should bring their own plates, utensils, and cup. We will have a washing basin on hand to help with cleanup.
Recital details
From slant-drum choreography to small-drum rhythms, LATI students demonstrate their recent work. LATI staff perform a piece from the copyleft repertoire.
Taiko Sweep details
A first-ever taiko science experiment! Participants in the Taiko Sweep receive a map of the surrounding area, and with the drums in the center of the park, form a circle facing outward. The group fans out, walking away from the taiko and picking up trash as the circle grows. Beyond the confines of the park, participants filter out along the surrounding streets, as far as the taiko can be heard. At the point that the taiko just ceases to be audible, participants mark their maps and return to the park. The results are combined into a map of the distance the sound of the taiko traveled from the park, while the surrounding area is clean of all trash!
