Torrance Park
2001 Santa Fe Ave
Torrance, CA

Schedule
10am Bachi Kuyo ceremony
10:15 bbq prep / hang out
11am potluck lunch
11:30 recital
12:30 Clean Sweep and final closing

Inspired by the annual brush-burning ritual of Japanese calligraphers, Bachi BBQ centers on a ceremony to appreciate and retire used and broken bachi.

Bachi Kuyo

Bring your broken and damaged bachi (drumsticks) for this ceremonial burning and show of appreciation.

After having held a pair of bachi for weeks, months, and sometimes years of practice, it feels improper to simply toss them in the trash. This ceremony provides a venue for showing appreciation for these bachi and for all the things that have come together to enable us to play taiko.

Wood bachi of all types are acceptable.

Potluck details

  • healthy foods
  • self + 3
  • no trash event

Following the Bachi Kuyo ceremony, we will have a light potluck lunch. Hiro and I will make tofu and yaki onigiri, and bring fresh fruit. Our goal is to make the potluck healthy and simple. If you'd like space at the grill, just ask!

Recital

LATI students demonstrate recent work! Contact Kris for details.

B-FUNC the trash!

We want ATUS/LATI to one day be able to put on an event that doesn't produce trash, especially the kind of plastic and styrofoam used at potlucks that lasts for centuries. Here is what we've found is most helpful to bring.

Bowl - more widely useful than a plate
Food item - your potluck item (container can be used for leftovers)
Utensil(s) - chopsticks, fork, fingers, etc.
Napkin - cloth
Cup - or water bottle

Recap: What to bring

  • Broken/tattered bachi for burning
  • B-FUNC no-trash items
