TaikOrff is a first step in our series of workshops, focusing on bringing together taiko teachers who deeply care about their students and are passionate about teaching. Instructor of TaikOrff, Yeeman Mui is dedicated to help create a more creative taiko classroom, while staying within the realms of the art of taiko. The workshop will focus on understanding the philosophy of Orff Schulwerk and applying it to taiko teaching.

by the end of the workshop, you will be able to
• Teach a musical language that will make it easier for students to learn (especially for those with no musical background)
• Utilize games and movement to help teach taiko concepts
• Find new ways to help keep students engaged
• Create a musical classroom which not only makes learning intricate pieces fun, but concentrates on group cohesiveness while playing “in the groove”

Workshop Format:
Come ready to participate! Workshops are highly interactive, as participants will take on the roll as students in the classroom. This involves dancing, playing percussion (and taiko drums), and singing. Discussion and questions will follow after each workshop session, as well as at the end of program. Total workshop hours for two days will be 10 hours.

Message from Manman (presenter and organizer of TaikOrff):
In multiple conversations with taiko artists/performers/teachers, some have inquired as to how to keep young ones (toddlers) focused in the classroom. I have found that no matter how young or old the student is, helping define a student’s natural sense of musicality (through song, dance, body music and taiko) can make the classroom more enjoyable and engaging!

Orff Schulwerk has been extremely influential on my teaching style, I’ve also found that it’s provided a positive influence on my approach of musical pedagogy. Since becoming a certified Orff instructor, taiko has continued to provide me with a gateway to be able to share the tools I’ve accumulated with my students in hopes that their musical experience will reverberate beyond the classroom and will create a musically fulfilling life.

I’m grateful to have studied under wonderful music educators. From them I’ve gathered the tools necessary to develop an approach to create a musical platform which makes learning music and taiko accessible (and enjoyable!) to not only toddlers, but every one of all ages and skill levels. I combined my love for Taiko with my love for teaching. I aspire to continue to find new ways to celebrate the essence of the mind, body and spirit through music. TaikOrff is my first step in bringing together taiko teachers who are not only willing to learn a new teaching style, but are willing to find a new meaning to musical appreciation. To all my fellow teaching enthusiast, I’m hoping you’ll be as excited as I am about incorporating pedagogy from non-taiko fields! Let’s all share our love for teaching and grow together!
