Shinobue Fundamentals

Learn the 3 basics of playing the shinobue - breathing, blowing, and finger movement. You will learn simple songs and how to produce different sounds.

Sun, January 29th - 10:00am-1:00pm
Katsugi Okedo Fundamentals

Learn the KODO style katsugi okedo. Learn how to grip bachi, the stance, and how to produce sound playing on one side.

Sun, January 29th - 3:00-6:00pm
Katsugi Okedo Intermediate Level

Start off with basics one by one, learn compositions, and learn how to produce more sound and advance your skills playing on both sides.

Sat, February 4th - 10:00am-1:00pm
Shinobue Fundamentals

Lean the 3 basics of playing the shinobue - breathing, blowing, and finger movement. You will learn simple songs and how to produce different sounds.

Sat, February 4th - 2:00-5:00pm
Shinobue Intermediate Level

Practice songs (Nishimonai & Kaigarabushi) and learn how to express more musically and improve your shinobue skills. You will get to learn and play many minyo/Japanese folk songs.

Sun, February 5th - 10:00am-1:00pm
Katsugi Okedo Intermediate Level

Start off with basics one by one, learn compositions, and learn how to produce more sound and advance your skills playing on both sides.

Sun, February 5th - 3:00-6:00pm
Katsugi Okedo Advanced Level

Review basics and get into details on skill improvement. You will get to create your own solo and learn how to express yourself.

Biography: 
Born in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, Rai started playing western drums since he was in elementary school. In 2011 Raijoined renowned group KODO and studied shinobue (bamboo flute) under KODO's Distinguished Member Motofumi Yamaguchi. In 2013 Rai took part in a musical dance theatre called "Amaterasu", collaborating with Kabuki actor and artistic director of KODO, Tamasaburo Bando. Rai has toured Japan and overseas with KODO and left the group in 2015. He formed a hogaku group called "Azuma" in 2016 and has toured in Japan, Spain, and Sweden. He now also been directing and supervising the Blue Green Festival and YAMAJAM Festival in Takashima City.
