What to know before contributing a work to the LATI Repertoire

All of the LATI Repertoire is covered by copyleft licenses that encourage free use, sharing, and modification. By releasing your work under a copyleft license you are explicitly allowing additional freedoms than are granted by standard copyright, including the freedom to perform and modify your works without asking permission or paying you royalties, as long as the terms of the copyleft license are met.

  • You must read and understand the implications of the copyleft license.
  • Releasing your work under a copyleft license has legal relevance for the ways your work can be used. A copyleft license grants others the freedom to use your work for commercial purposes, for example. You must understand the details of these implications before releasing your work.

  • Release under a copyleft license is irrevocable.
  • You cannot change your mind and "take the work back" (though additional licenses can be used as described below).

  • You remain the copyright owner of the work.
  • Releasing your work under a copyleft license does not forfeit your copyright. In fact, your legal basis for releasing the work under a copyleft license is founded on your copyright.

  • You may cross-license the work as desired.
  • As the copyright owner, you may release the same work under additional licenses as you wish. Cross-licensing can be used to receive royalties from an entity interested in a work but who won't or can't abide by the requirements of the copyleft license. For example, a company might want to use the composition in a commercial but doesn't wish to release their commercial under the rules of copyleft (as required by the "ShareAlike" aspect of the copyleft license). The creator can choose to negotiate a separate license for this company's use of the work.

  • You enforce your copyright.
  • While LATI encourages respectful use and community cooperation and seeks to educate users about their freedoms and responsibilities, LATI is under no obligation to defend your work from abuse by others or enforce the terms of your license.
