Hachijo Daiko: Your Own Piece

LATIdama Overview

Earning the Hachijo-Daiko LATIdama indicates that you have proficiency in a set of skills LATI considers fundamental to Hachijo-style playing, along with the experience of undergoing the thought processes necessary to create your own solo piece. Specifically, recipients of the Hachijo-Daiko LATIdama are able to play a complete solo using the Honbataki Shitauchi, along with a short "jam" using either Yuukichi or Shabataki.

In order to receive this LATIdama, you must complete the following Requirements.

  1. Demonstrate your ability to play a Honbataki Solo with an evident introduction, body, build, climax, and an ending.
  2. Demonstrate a short solo on a Yuukichi or Shabataki Shitauchi with acceptable sticking, form, strike control, and dynamics.

Rubric

The evaluation will be graded as follows.

Req 1: Honbataki

  • Understanding of the Hachijo Daiko style - specifically the concept of double-strikes on one hand, along with the left-hand back hand, and twirls.
  • Introduction, body, climax, and ending is apparent, thought out, and executed with acceptable sticking, form, strike control, and dynamics

Req 2: Yuukichi or Shabataki

  • Understanding of the Hachijo Daiko style - specifically the concept of double-strikes on one hand, along with the left-hand back hand, and twirls.
  • Ability to understand and play along with the backbeat
