Omiyage Class Week 7 - Student Perspective

Omiyage class week 7 reviewed and tested our knowledge of the known parts. We began with reviewing different sections we had questions about or requested to review. Then Yuta tested our knowledge by saying different sections and having us play them immediately after. It was difficult but we were able to use the cheat sheet for help. However, after a few run throughs he took away the sheet and we had to go through them by memory, which was much more difficult.

We then played through the first half of the piece, took a small break, then completed the second half. Next we had one last review of specific sections requested from by the class. With 15 minutes left, Yuta handed out worksheets to complete during the coaching period which begins next week with Jen Baik. The worksheet revisited one of the main goals of the class: figuring out what Omiyage means to the individual player and expressing that meaning through our playing. Yuta explained that Omiyage is a story of struggle. The worksheet challenges us to think of a story of struggle in our lives. Next, we are to link the different sections of the piece to the corresponding parts of our story. The story or topic can be of something in the past or present, and the conclusion can be defined or left incomplete. The main goal is to use these feelings in the piece to make Omiyage stronger and more meaningful.

I have really appreciated Yuta’s instruction for the past 7 weeks. Not only did my form change, but also the way I think about hits and movement. I’ve always struggled with expressing themes or emotions in pieces. I always knew the importance of this concept, but didn’t know how to approach the topic. With Yuta’s instruction, I am beginning to be a more mindful, expressive and thoughtful taiko player. I am thankful for Yuta sharing his knowledge to help everyone improve not only technically, but also on a deeper emotional level.
