Open to those who have attended the have previously taken workshops with Chieko.
This workshop will go beyond the initial teachings of Chieko's famed style, to start finding your own "style" of drumming through Hachijo Taiko.
Participants combine the beauty of Japanese traditional dance with taiko, learning the powerful Hana Hachijo drumming style made famous by Chieko on tour with Kodo. Open to both female and male performers, participants learn how to push their bodies' strength and endurance to the limit without sacrificing grace. Many of the techniques are directly applicable to other taiko styles by helping to improve general movement and body control.

Chieko Kojima
Biography:
Chieko Kojima first encountered Japanese folk dancing when she moved to Sado to join Sado no Kuni Ondekoza in 1976, and in 1981 she became one of the founding members of Kodo. She is noted for her original style of dance in Kodo's international performances, exemplified by her vivid portrayal of the goddess Uzume in Tamasaburo Bando's 2006, Amaterasu. Kojima also seeks new expressions in the female song-and-dance trio Hanayui and has an active solo career that is perhaps best characterized in her ongoing project, Yukiai.
