Fundamentals - Getting consistent sounds from both hands.

RRRR RRRR (around the speed of 8 and 16 of 4-8-16-32)
LLLL LLLL (same as above)
LRLR LRLR
Dorotsuku Left Hand Lead
Maracas

Tips - Try focusing on various parts of the hand when you grip the sticks. For example, focusing on the first joint of my pointing finger helps make the stick feel like an extension of my pointing finger. However, a different person might focus on a different part of the hand, or maybe even a different part of the body. When doing the above drills, it's important to try different things out and see what gets you the most consistent sound. I think about the tip of the stick and how it comes in contact with the drum head, what my grip feels like when the stick hits the drum, whether I catch the stick as it bounces off the drum or do I push the sound through the drum, whether I think of a short note followed by a short rest, or one long note (don rest vs doooon), etc. etc. These are some things to think about and try out as we continue with the drill.

When executing Maracas, I find it helpful to "gaze" at the center of the drum. This allows me to 'see' all parts of the drum equally as opposed to focusing on one point. For example, if I focus on the 'gang' sound, I tend to 'look' at the edge of the drum closest to my left hand, and I can no longer see the far edge of the drum. This affects the next 'ka' with my right. Where, and how you look at the drum while playing will have a significant impact on your sound. I 'gaze' at the center of the drum, but another person might focus on each part of the drum they're playing. It really depends on the person, so try experimenting as we repeat the drill.
