If you're interested in learning more about the various types of taiko and the roles they play in an ensemble, as well as how to solo and play ji, today is your lucky day. :D
Each class typically follows the format below:
Style of the Day - Every other week we introduce a new style of taiko (Beta, Naname, Shime, Odaiko) and begin with an overview of how to hold the sticks, stance, and the basic mechanics. When introducing a new style, we will cover rhythms and phrases closely associated with the style. For example, during the Naname segment we covered traditional rhythms from Obon Festival drumming. This allowed participants to experience not only the style, but to also learn the vocabulary.
Exploration - Participants pair up and freely explore the style with their partner. This exchange between students can be based on the rhythmic vocabulary learned in class, or it can be based on material from outside of class. For example, play a ji pattern for your partner while they play the rhythms we just covered. Try changing the ji pattern and/or the tempo and see how it affects the way your partner plays. A lot of unexpected discoveries are made during these exchanges, so keep your eyes and ears open. Through the exchange, experience how your playing affects your partner, and vice versa.
Solo Exchange - Show the rest of the class what you and your partner came up with. During the exploration, everyone has been playing simultaneously, but this is an opportunity to hear just yourself and your partner. Experience how subtle changes can make a huge impact on the music.
I'd say this course has been one of the most fun to teach because there are so many unpredictable elements. Every class was filled with new discoveries and I hope you're able to join us for the fun.
