  • Hit the #s (1, 2, 3, 4) and "a" with the right (R). Hit the "e" and "u" with the left (L).

RUDIMENT 5

1e-- / ---- / 3e-- / ----
---- / 2e-- / ---- / 4e--
--au / --au / --au / --au
All dogo (RL--) hits

  • Do not shorten your arms. Extend them and force yourself to time the hits.
  • Make sure to consistently hit the down beats (#s) with the first hits (R). It's easy of people to hit the down beats on the second hit (L).
    Group Exercise: Rudiment 5 (video)

Rudiment 2

1-a- / 2-a- / 3-a- / 4-a-

  • do go hits; alternating hands (R-L- / R-L- ...)
  • Goal: L as loud as R, confident hits. Pay attention to the height of the bachis when you pull them up for a strike. If the L and R bachis reach the same strike heights, they should sound more even.
  • Don't turn your body. Try to keep your shoulder "locked".
Exercise
  • Group A plays four counts of Groove 1 once (the simple doda form) as Group B plays four counts of Rudiment 2. Switch parts.
  • Group A plays two counts of Groove 1 as Group B plays two counts of Rudiment 2. Switch parts. x2
  • Group A plays one counts of Groove 1 as Group B plays one counts of Rudiment 2. Switch parts. x4

Rudiment 3

1eau / 2eau / 3eau / 4eau

  • dogodogo hits; alternating hands (RLRL / RLRL ...)
  • Goal: tight timing. Focus on hitting the R with the Groove 1 hits (on the do and da).
  • Concentrate and engage with the rhythm. Can't let mind wander or else you might miss the beat or stagger the hits with the beat.
Exercise
  • Group A plays four counts of Groove 1 once (the simple doda form) as Group B plays four counts of Rudiment 3. Switch parts.
  • Group A plays two counts of Groove 1 as Group B plays two counts of Rudiment 3. Switch parts. x2
  • Group A plays one counts of Groove 1 as Group B plays one counts of Rudiment 3. Switch parts. x4

Group Exercise: Rudiment 2 & 3 (video)

Homework:

Things to Remember

Pedestal Stance
  • For detailed hits, not really more full power.
  • Put most of your weight on a bent left leg. You should be able lift your right leg off the floor and play standing on just the left leg.
  • The right leg is extended toward the taiko, lightly touching the floor. There should be a diagonal line that can be drawn from the top of your head to your right toe.
  • Find a stance that is not too formal nor laxed.
Full Strike Stance
  • For full powered hits
