  • Stretch and aisatsu.

Rudiments 2-3

LOOP
  • Do the Alternating Groups drill on a loop for Rudiments 2-3. Keep going until the teacher instructs the class to stop.
INCREMENTALLY FASTER
  • The teacher will set a tempo at the beginning. Do the Alternating Groups drill for Rudiments 2-3 at that speed.
  • The teacher will set a tempo once more, this time a little faster than the previous. Do the Alternating Groups drill at that new speed.
  • Keep doing this drill, each time faster than the previous tempo.

Solo Drill

  • Goal: FEEL THE BEAT! Feel the beat of Groove 1 and play whatever you like on top of it.
  • Try things out. This is a safe space where mistakes aren't a big deal.
  • Don't stress about what to do. Have fun!

Vivian's Challenge Pattern

---- / ---- / ---- / --au
1e-- / 2e-- / 3e-- / ----
---- / 2eau / --a- / --a-
1--- / 2--u / 3e-- / 4e--
#s and "a" are R hits. "e" and "u" are L hits.

ONE BAR AT A TIME
  • Practice each bar separately.
  • Once you get the hang of playing the individual bars, start from the beginning and gradually add on the subsequent bars.
    • Play just bar 1. Next play bars 1-2. Then play bars 1-3. Finally play 1-4.
GROUPS
  • Separate the class into 2 groups; Group A and Group B.
  • The teacher plays the ji-pattern throughout the drill.
  • The entire class plays Vivian's Pattern. Afterwards, only Group A plays. The class plays again, followed by just Group B playing. End the drill with the class playing the pattern.
  • There are no transitional breaks. Group/class plays the pattern immediately after the previous group finishes.
COPY CAT
  • Teacher plays part of the pattern. Class repeats the pattern played.
THINGS TO REMEMBER
  • Bar 3: don't start before count 2. Don't rush to start.

CLASS v SOLO
  • As the teacher plays the ji-pattern (throughout the whole drill), the entire class plays David's challenge pattern.
  • One person plays the pattern. Class plays together again. Next person solo-plays the pattern. Class plays again, and so on and so forth. Once everyone has solo-played, end the drill with the class playing the pattern.
  • There are no transitional breaks. Class/soloist plays immediately after the previous pattern is played..
