Matsuri Crashers 5 Structure
Req 1 - Run-through
While being video recorded, student plays the entire structure with facilitator, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the structure and an ability to adjust and properly support the soloist.
Req 1 Rubric
- jiuchi played comfortably, confidently
- jiuchi played musically; tones consistent, tempo steady, etc
- no significant structural mistakes
- volume adjusted to match soloist
- able to "hold it together" by maintaining and emphasizing groove when soloist is lost, soloist is uncertain
- able to "jump ship" and switch to soloist downbeat
Req 2 - Jiuchi speed check and Supporting the soloist
While being video taped, student checks the starting tempo with a metronome and proceeds to play the following.
-- 32 em of 5 Structure ("ten tsukutsu ten") jiuchi at 160 or faster tempo; on bar 31, student calls "ichi, ni, so-re"
-- 8 em smoothly increasing speed; switch to "teke" jiuchi during or following those 8em
-- 8 em of "teke" at a constant speed

Student demonstrates the technical ability to handle the fast rhythms of the 5 Structure, adjust tempo smoothly, give a count-in for a soloist when needed, and play the cue at a very fast tempo.

- able to take tempo from metronome
- able to maintain constant tempo
- able to play "ten tsuku" confidently and musically at 160bpm for 32em
- able to switch smoothly to eighth-note "teke" at faster speeds
- able to smoothly increase speed
- able to say count-in for soloist when necessary
- able to play the cue at 160bpm+
