Intro
Aisatsu
Bachi choice
- Smaller drum/thinner skin ~> smaller/lighter bachi
- Larger drum/thicker skin ~> larger/heavier bachi
- Playing multiple drums (eventually) = compromise
Grip
- Top fulcrum, first finger & thumb
- Keep all fingers on the bachi as much as possible
Strike technique
- Mostly wrists
- Palms down toward drum
- Let bachi bounce; not pressing into the drum
Basic jiuchi
- Ji = base beat
- Four ji patterns common to North American Taiko: Straight, Swing, Horse, Matsuri
Drills
- Eight on a hand: 8R 8L 16R | 8L 8R 16L
- Alternating Strikes: 8 hits lead hand, 16 hits alternating, 8 hits lead hand, 15 hits alternating (leave out last 16th)
