Course Explanation
- Each week will be focusing on different Shitauchi
- On Hachijo Island, rather than "practicing" Hachijo Daiko, people got better watching, copying and having fun with one another at gatherings, feasts, bars, etc.
- Focus on "feeling good" playing Hachijo, for both Shitauchi and Uwauchi
- Goal of each class will not be to create & perform a solo, but to find your joy and voice with each Shitauchi type

Rules!
- Groove and enjoy the music your hear
- Copy / take inspiration from rhythms that others are playing
(and don't worry about how you look! pick and choose the rhythms that feel good to you)
- Practice Hachijo Chant kakegoe: Kita Mata Mata Mattai or Kita Mata Kita Mata

Shitauchi Practice
- Practice the best-feeling Shabataki for yourself, and explain with class what mood/story you associate with the beat
- Class decide on who's Shabataki ji to practice: Wendy's Shabataki, image of her late dog's excitement

Shabataki Ji Practice

Uwauchi Practice
- Take turns in teams to practice Uwauchi rhythms that make you feel good, based on given Shitauchi theme, and share with class

Copycat Drill
- Take turns being the leader, play a 1-bar phrase and the class copies (but has freedom in exploring different kata)
- Eight (8) rhythms per person

Mawashiuchi Practice
- Incorporate your own rhythms or rhythms you were taught/inspired by others
