earplugs

Class syllabus:

Welcome

4-8-16-32
(1) 4-8-16-32 straight though
(2) Part 4 and Part 8
Things to Remember
-- Extend your arms; pull your arms as far as you can away from the taiko so you can hit with more force
-- When you bend your elbow to strike the taiko, the elbow should be pointed toward the taiko's face
-- Throw the butt of the baichi first and let the head follow to strike taiko
(3) Practice just Part 16 and Part 32
Keep in mind: Play with your elbows. Unlike Part 4 and 8, you don't have time to extend your arms to strike the taiko.
(4) Part 32 for individual arms
-- Hit just the down beats with the right arm (16 hits)
-- Hit just the up beats with the left arm (16 hits)
Keep in mind: The tempo of the 16 hits are the same as Part 16 (of the 4-8-16-32). It's like you're playing the beat of Part 16 with just one hand.
-- combine both the down and up beats to form Part 32

M-Patterns
(1) Normal: 1o2o3o4o
(2) Normal x2 + extended
-- 1o1o111o
-- 2o2o222o
-- 3o3o333o
-- 4o4o444o
(3) Solo: With the same timing and temp as the previous "Normal x2 + extended" create your own pattern (using parts from M-Patterns) ending with otsuri
-- ie: 4o3o213o, 123o4o2o, 2o413o3o

Ji Pattern
(1) DON, do go do GON (repeats)
Things to Remember
-- play quietly; should be playing with wrists
-- first DON and last GON are louder than the middle 3 beats
-- Slight pause in the middle of first DON and next do
-- If playing playing 3x: DON, do go do GON DON, do go do GON DON, do go do GON
(2) Ji Pattern + Solo Input
-- As everyone plays the Ji Pattern, take turns playing your own made up solo. Must end with otsuri

Class Made M-Patterns
4o1o423o
How to remember pattern: "Yolo 423"
When written in a certain way, "4" looks like "Y". Plus, 4 is "yo" in Japanese.
244o3o14
How to remember pattern: "Nishi Pi"
2 is "ni" in Japanese
"Shi" is another way to say 4 in Japanese
Pi = 3.14
Keep in mind: There is no otsuri at the end of this
