nagado bachi (usually larger diameter, harder "kashi" wood)

Welcome
Sml-Med-Lrg Hits
(1) Small Hits: Wrists
-- Relax
-- And make sure the sounds are even
-- Palms facing inwards, tracking path of the primary line
-- When hitting, make sure the fulcrum is at the bottom (butt of the bachi), and catch the bounce
-- Don't tilt your body
(2) Medium Hits: Elbows
-- Step 3: Elbow bent, preparing to hit.
-- Step 4: Throw butt of bachi toward taiko. Straighten arm out.
-- Step 5: Hit and catch the bounce.
-- Reset: Straighten bachi out in line with arm. Head of bachi pointed toward the middle of taiko
RIGHT HAND: STEP 3
-- Bend elbow as much as you can. If you place a bachi in between, you'll be able to hold it.
-- Elbow pointed at the taiko.
-- Bachi is in line with the forearm
LEFT HAND: STEP 3
-- The middle of the bachi should be by your right ear.
Things to Remember
-- Even though you're just bending your elbows, it should generate a whole bunch of sound; just as loud as a full strikes.
-- Speed differential to and from a hit
---- Going toward the taiko to hit: fast
---- After a hit and moving away from the taiko: slower and smooth
(3) Large Hits: Full Arms
-- Step 2: Arms straight and fully extended away from the taiko, preparing to hit
-- Followed by Steps 3-5.
Things to Remember
-- Step 2 with left hand: face can be covered.
Game
Students are in position at their taiko with their eyes closed. When teacher says "2" students exten
d their right arm and prepare to hit the taiko. When the teacher clicks their bachi, students hit the taiko. The first person to hit, wins. Alternate between right and left arm.
-- Improve striking; fast and loud.
M1-4
(1) M1-4 (x4)
Things to Remember
-- During M4, make sure the left hits (gon) are just as loud as the right (don).
(2) Normal x2 + Extended
-- 1o1o111o, 2o2o222o etc
Things to Remember
-- Try not to "loiter": Don't draw back too early and have the arm waiting where it's not suppose to be.
-- During M2 Extended, try drawing both arms back during the *tsu* (after the first 2 don don). This prepares/resets your right arm to hit the first 2 strikes again with out rush. Hopefully ensures loud hits.
(3) Normal x2 + Extended with KA
-- At the very end, after the M4 extended, replace the da-ga's with a single "ka" (both bachies hitting the rim once)
