Set Up
- Find a drum that feels right (different pitch/tone, resonance)
- Have a likes and not-so-likes of shitauchi sounds
Masa Philosophies
Difference in soloing in a jam-session vs for a performance
- Masa enjoys the jam-session feel: improvising, and connecting/communicating with partner through the drum
- Q: "How do you practice that?"
A: "Not 100% consistent nor true, but practicing a solo that develops, musically and tonally, throughout solo. And having a 'that felt good/ bad' response"
Jam Session
Yuukichi, Shatabaki
- Both Masa and Rhys do shitauchi/uwauchi for each other
Drills
1eau Drill (1 Accent, just the accents, 4x each)
- Sticking: RLLR, or anything (R only, L only, mix)
- Form: Extend away from drum (prep arm) and consciously striking at right moment
Exploring different R and L strikes
- R strike: imagine box and hitting different corners
- L strike: imagine graph (X and Y axis) and hitting different parabolas
- Mix and match; find styles that feels good
Importance of connecting and trusting the shitauchi player
- Speed ups and playing funky rhythms only work with certain people who "get" what you're doing
- Otherwise, it may be a disservice of playing a solo that the shitauchi player cannot keep up with
