Discussion
Strengths: hand speed, knowledge and ability to play various techniques, ensemble presence (sense of feeling with fellow players and/or audience and adjust while playing according to feeling), not intimidated by challenging rhythms, sight reading,
Weakness: Tempo consistency, endurance, sustained speed, unpolished technique (refine and develop what is left of muscle memory), lack of polyrhythmic feel, play by ear, taiko form (strike and stance), limb independence, left hand timing/technique, fue, traditional taiko knowledge,
What I would like to work on.
Knowledge:
Learn the various styles of taiko and their history (similar to hachijo history sharing)
Learn about the drum making process, history of the different drums, purpose of the drum (in performance and cultural meaning)
Learn famous taiko pieces ( must know repertoire songs)
Learn how to tune and position drums for their differing events
Showmanship:
Posture adjustment
Use full body range of motion in movements, stick twirls, strikes
Graceful movements with powerful strikes
Stick twirls/visual effects
Musicality:
Develop techniques on multiple taiko instruments (be a well rounds taiko player)
Paradiddle speed and implementation
32nd note individual strikes
Develop hand independence
Build repertoire
Work on copycat
Left hand lead
Improve left hand technique
Improve sound quality across all speeds and dynamics
What I am looking for in our practice.
15 minute warm up. (Time to critique technique stance/strike/sound and improve musicality topics). Measure and track warm up tempos/ dynamics
30 minutes of focus on an area of showmanship or repitroire building
10 minutes copycat/something to practice until next time. (Maybe a demononstration of something you would like to challenge me to learn/develop and I will record to practice with)
5 minutes of frantic cleaning
