Class syllabus:

Aisatsu
Self Intros

Stretch

Odaiko Fundamentals

Grip
Top Grip, no need to grip tight but just enough where bachi doesn’t slip out

Wrists / Fingers
Bounce (“B”) Exercise — strike and bring back to position, pointing away from drum
Stop (“S”) Exercise — strike and catch rebound so bachi is pointing up (perpendicular to your arm)

B x16 -> S x16
B x8 -> S x8 (x2)
B x4 -> S x4 (x4)
B x2 -> S x2 (x8)

Stance / Bachi Placement
Bachi shoulder width apart, and not hitting center of drum (aim for the Tomoe marks)
Don’t let bachi sway left & right; let it become second nature to keep still in position

Elbows
Push elbow back while relaxing bachi; use whip-like motion to strike into drum
1-min Elbows

Arms
1 — set at Odaiko; bachi parallel and pointing at ceiling
2 — push arm up for full extension while still pointing at ceiling
3 — bachi swings behind back
4 — one motion (elbow -> wrist -> snap) to strike into Odaiko
Flow of 1-2-3-4

Goal of course
First five (5) weeks: work on fundamentals
Following three (3) weeks: soloing, and structure to play both Odaiko and Shime amongst students!

** Will definitely play on the Shime next week…!
