Chappa
Ken has been taking KaDon's (Shoji's) online Chappa course
Goal: to get good enough on chappa, kane, and fue to join a taiko group
Chappa Form
Drill: 4-8 / 2-4 / 1-2(R lead, switch L lead)
Notes:
- Think basic striking of moving arms vertically + rotating angles
- Focus on movement for the "lead hand" and staying relaxed
- Maintain space between self and chappa, and keep in front of self (elbows not pointing outwards)
- Less robotic stops after hitting, especially down-strike
Practicing 16th notes:
- Right lead: approx goal tempo 130bpm
- Left lead: approx goal tempo 110bpm
Drill: Ji RanChan
Notes:
- Angles of each chappa during "Ji" -- release for longer and brighter Ji sound, using natural force of gravity
- Less surface hitting during "RanChan" -- easy to stay in small bubble, so open up and aim for less "cuppy" RanChan sounds
- Practice just the "Ji" right lead and left lead to check movement, chappa placement, and sound consistency
Matsuri Daiko
- Var 1: Ji - - cha | chan - chan - (four hits)
- Var 2: Ji - chacha | chan - chan - (five hits)
Incorporating Ji RanChan sounds, and the feeling of crescendo-ing to the "Ji"
