Notation
See Class 01 for detailed notation.
- 4 dashes (-) = #eau = 1 count
- 4 counts = 1 bar.
Each count is seperated by a "/ ". Each bar is separated by starting on the next line or with brackets [ ]. - Hits are emphasized with #s and "e" "a" "u"
- Hit the #s (1, 2, 3, 4) and "a" with the right (R). Hit the "e" and "u" with the left (L).
- Kuchishoga
- "g-" = L hits
"d-" = R hits

Rudiment Review
RUDIMENT 1A
1--- / ---- / ---- / ----
---- / 2--- / ---- / ----
---- / ---- / 3--- / ----
---- / ---- / ---- / 4---
All don (R) hits
RUDIMENT 1B
--a- / ---- / ---- / ----
---- / --a- / ---- / ----
---- / ---- / --a- / ----
---- / ---- / ---- / --a-
All don (R) hits
- Group alternating exercise: Just 1A. Just 1B. Both.
- 1B counting exercise: group alternating exercise for 1B, but everyone audibly counts "1 & 2 & 3 &..." Helps with timing and making sure hits are on the "&".
- "Wait longer, move faster, hit louder."
- Figure out distance of the bachi to the skin, and with that, figure out the timing of the hits. How far does the bachi need to travel? When do you need to start moving in order for the strike to be exactly on time?
RUDIMENT 2
1-a- / 2-a- / 3-a- / 4-a-
do go hits; alternating hands (R-L- / R-L- ...)
- Group alternating 4-2-1 exercise: play 4 counts, then 2 counts (x2), then 1 count (x4).
- Left hits need to be just as loud (if not louder) as the right.
- Extend left arm back further when you hit with your right; don't accidentally shorten the distance.
- Bachi needs to move freely. Loose grip and bachi falls back into thenar webspace.
RUDIMENT 3
1eau / 2eau / 3eau / 4eau
dogodogo hits; alternating hands (RLRL / RLRL ...)
- Group alternating 4-2-1 exercise.
RUDIMENTS 1-3
- Do the group alternating exercise for Rudiments 1-3 right after the other.
Rudiment 4: Lefty
--a- / --a- / --a- / --a-
--a- / --a- / --a- / 4---
go (L) hits on #s. The last hits are godo (LR)
- Class v. solo alternation exercise.
RUDIMENT 5
1e-- / ---- / 3e-- / ----
---- / 2e-- / ---- / 4e--
--au / --au / --au / --au
All dogo (RL--) hits
- Group alternating exercise.
- Focus on rhythmic accuracy.
- Don't "crush" the hits (shortening the audio space between hits). Each hit needs to be individual, solid, and well timed.
Rudiment 6: Go Don
1a: 1--- / ---- / ---- / --a-
1u: 1--- / ---- / ---- / ---u
Do (R) hits on 1s. Go (L) hits on "a" and "u"
KRIS'S CHALLENGE PATTERN
Group A 1--- / ---- / ---- / --a-
Group B 1--- / ---- / ---- / ---u
Group A 1--- / ---- / ---- / ---u
Group B 1--- / ---- / ---- / --a-
- Play the full four bars 4x.
- Listen to the last hit of each bar and how well timed it is with the first hit of the next bar.
RUDIMENTS 1-6
- Do the group alternating exercise for Rudiments 1-6 right after the other.
