Notation

See Class 01 for detailed notation.

  • 4 dashes (-) = #eau = 1 count
  • 4 counts = 1 bar.
Each count is seperated by a "/ ". Each bar is separated by starting on the next line or with brackets [ ].
  • Hits are emphasized with typed #s and "e" "a" "u"
  • Hit the #s (1, 2, 3, 4) and "a" with the right (R). Hit the "e" and "u" with the left (L).
  • Kuchishoga
    • "g-" = L hits
      "d-" = R hits

Welcome

  • Stretch
  • name and "I love the sound of ____"

Groove 1

GROUP A v GROUP B
  • Do the alternating group drill on the taiko. Everyone is counting out loud "1eau..." throughout the whole drill.
  • Do the drill again, without counting out loud.
LEFTY + SOLO
  • Do the solo drill, but everyone plays the ji left-handed, by standing on the right side of the taiko. Play your solo regularly right-handed.
Things to Remember
  • Don't hit the taiko too hard during the ji. Hit the face with maybe 50% power and let the sound resonate in the body.

Rudiment 1

GROUP A v GROUP B
  • Do the alternating group drill while everyone counts out loud.
  • Do the drill left-handed.
  • Do the drill normally (right-handed) without counting out loud.
Things to Remember
  • Stance: get closer to the taiko so your body is open to the empty space in front of the taiko's face.
  • The left feet is placed on the same latitude as the stand's front feet (the ones closer to the player). Don't be farther from the taiko or else it will result in you turning your torso.
  • Your body should be parallel to the taiko. Imagine you hipbones are headlights; they need to be pointing toward the empty space.
  • By having the empty space in front of you, your arms are able to draw back farther away from the taiko to hit harder/louder. It also evens out the draw back for both left and right arms.
  • Make sure the draw-back of your arms follow the perpendicular line that passes through the taiko's center. Do not draw back further behind you or turn your toro.
  • Don't hyper-stretch the body/legs when hitting. Bend knees so you won't lose balance.

Rudiment 6

BODY PERCUSSION TIMING DRILL 1: 4 COUNTS
  • Everyone plays "chest - clap" representing the groove.
  • For 4 counts, everyone says "don" on 1 and & of the 4th count.
  • For the next 4 counts, everyone says "don" on 1 and u of the 4th count. The u is in between the clap (& of the 4th count) and the chest of 1 (next bar).
  • Loop the drill until teacher instructs the class to stop.
BODY PERCUSSION TIMING DRILL 2: SORE SWITCH
  • Class does the drill starting off with looping the "1a" bar.
  • When the teacher says "sore", class switches to the "1u" bar.
  • Everytime the teacher says "sore" switch to the other bar. Keep going until the teacher instructs the class to stop.
BODY PERCUSSION TIMING DRILL 3: GROUP A v B
  • Divide the class into 2 groups: Group A and B.
  • Everyone plays "chest - clap" representing the groove.
  • For 4 counts, Group A says "don" on 1 and & of the 4th count.
  • For the next 4 counts Group B says "don" on 1 and & of the 4th count.
  • For the next 4 counts, Group A says "don" on 1 and u of the 4th count.
  • For the final 4 counts, Group B says "don" on 1 and u of the 4th count.
CONDENSED PATTERN

1--- / --a- / 3--- / ---u

  • This pattern in basically condensing the 2 bars of Rudiment 6 into 1 bar.
  • Don (R) on the #s. Gon (L) on "u". Hit "a" with R or L, whichever you are comfortable with. It doesn't matter for now; focus more on the timing.
  • Class plays the pattern on loop. Play together until teacher instructs the class to stop.
  • Do the group alternating drill (Group A v B); 2 bars at a time (play pattern twice).

Rudiment 5

CORE TIGHTENING DRILL

This drill is to simulate how your core needs to tighten when playing dogon.

  • Lightly place your left hand on your lower back and your right hand on your stomach, the place under your bellybutton.
  • Take a deep breath. Yell/exhale "sore!" from your stomach (not just vocal chords) by tighten your core. If done correctly, you should feel the back and stomach (where you place your hands) move.
  • Keep doing this drill until you get the hang of tightening your core.
BAR 3: "AU"
  • The teacher plays the ji and counts in the class ("Ichi...ni...ichi ni SORE").
  • At the corresponding speed, the class plays bar 3 ("au" bar) once.
  • The teacher, who is continuing the ji, counts the class back in. The speed can change.
  • At the corresponding speed, the class plays bar 3 once.
  • After a few bars, the teacher stops counting in the class out loud, but still plays the ji (4 counts worth) to reset the speed. Everyone says "sore" right before playing the pattern. Make sure to tighten your core.
Things to Remember
  • Don't draw your arms back laterally. It's more about going up and using gravity to create a good hit.
  • Always utilize the space you have between the extended arm (in striking position) and the taiko.
  • Incorporate the adjusted stance you learned; get closer to the taiko, body and shoulder parallel to the taiko, etc.

ManMan's Challenge Pattern

1--- / ---- / 3e-- / ----
--au / --au / --au / --au
1--- / --a- / 3--- / ---u
1-a- / 2-a- / 3eau / 4eau

R--- / ---- / RL-- / ----
--RL / --RL / --RL / --RL
R--- / --*L- / R--- / ---L *For now, hit can be R or L
R-L- / R-L- / RLRL / RLRL

BODY PERCUSSION DRILL
  • As everyone "chest - clap" the ji-pattern, say the kuchishouga of each bar, one at a time. Repeat the kuchishouga for harder bars (ie: bar 3).
  • Continue the "chest - clap". Say the kuchishouga of the entire challenge pattern.
